South Dakota Lottery

The South Dakota Lottery does not yet offer online ticket sales, and there are no indications that change is imminent.

Although state law can change quickly, neither the South Dakota Lottery nor lawmakers have indicated an interest in approving online lottery sales.

Additionally, none of the nation’s licensed lottery courier apps are available in South Dakota. Jackpocket, the fastest-expanding lottery courier app today, has stated it currently has no timeline for when it may enter South Dakota.

In short, it is impossible to estimate when players will be able to buy South Dakota Lottery tickets online.

In the meantime, licensed retailers remain the only legal avenue to play South Dakota Lottery games.

Some licensed retailers have South Dakota Lottery vending machines offering scratch tickets, draw games, and ticket scanners.

Note: SD Lottery vending machines accept cash only and do not offer change.

Although some state lotteries operate loyalty programs with similar names, the South Dakota Lottery Players Club is not a rewards program.

Instead, the Players Club offers access to second-chance drawings and other tools regular players may find helpful. It’s free to join, and registration involves sharing your name, e-mail address, and mailing address.

Players Club membership grants players access to the following:

  • Play It Again Drawings: Submit non-winning scratch tickets online or through the SD Lottery app for chances to win travel packages, cash prizes, and ticket bundles.
  • Custom Game Alerts: Set up custom e-mail or in-app alerts for new game launches, winning numbers, and jackpot thresholds.
  • Group/Office Pools: The Players Club advertises an exclusive tool to start lottery pools with friends and coworkers, but the “tool” is just a blank worksheet players can print and fill in manually to track the game, draw date, estimated jackpot, participants, and how much they contributed to buying tickets.
  • Ticket Checker/Scanner: Members can check their tickets for winners by logging in to their Players Club accounts on the website and submitting any ticket’s serial number. Members can also log in on the SD Lottery app and use the ticket scanner feature to check for winners using their phone’s camera.

No. The SD Lottery does not publicize winners’ names unless they opt-in on their claim forms.

However, if the SD Lottery receives an open records request for that information, it must provide the winner’s name, city and state of residence, and amount won.

The South Dakota Lottery transfers roughly $0.95 of every $1.00 it earns to the state to support responsible gambling and two state funds:

  • General Fund: Nearly half of the General Fund supports public education in South Dakota. It also supports programs like Medicaid, family assistance, and corrections.
  • Capital Construction Fund: Money in the Capital Construction Fund supports water, environmental, and public transportation efforts.
